The "Théâtre Premier" series, presented in September 2015, marks a transition between Act I and Act II of Floating Presences.
The artist explains:
"I created this series with the idea of unfolding space and time at a moment when division and immediacy seem to have become the dominant imperatives. To do so, I explored the concept of representation, which I see as the point where the real, the imaginary and the symbolic intersect.
Certain forms of representation, which can also be understood as social markers, crystallize an archaic process of construction. To embody this idea, I chose masks from so-called 'primitive' cultures or distant civilizations, whose original functions correspond to those of the institutions of what we call modern societies, onto which I placed them.
Totemic masks replace the faces, while uniforms loaded with symbolic meaning become the bodies.
From this encounter emerges both a theatre of the world and the possibility of imagining another—one in which the face of modernity is tribal."
